Making History Matter series of talks : November 2021

Our next talk by a guest speaker in our “Making History Matter” series will be held on Monday 8th November 2021.

Time:  Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Venue:  St. Matthews Church Hall, Stirling Square Guildford.

Guest speaker Anna Wyatt is the Director: Aboriginal History Western Australia, at the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.  She presents a roll call of some unusual soldiers.  Her book “They served with honour: no less worthy” is an account of Aboriginal war veterans from World War I.

It traces the stories of 135 WA Aboriginal volunteers who enlisted successfully, while others were rejected on the grounds of origin or descent.  In WA most of these soldiers came from the South West, including Eucla, and would find themselves fighting at Gallipoli, the Middle East and the Western Front.

Drawing on archival and genealogical research from both the State and nationally, as well as some private papers, Anna provides a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Aboriginal people at this time.  Her work is a gift that enriches the national war story.

All welcome.  Stay after the meeting for a light supper and some networking.
