We welcome visitors to our free exhibition “Cradle of the Colony – A story of Guildford and the Swan Valley” in the Courthouse, Meadow Street Guildford.

The exhibition gives a fascinating insight into the history of Guildford and the Swan Valley from Captain James Stirling’s expedition up the Swan River in 1827 until the present day.  Find out more about the difficult times of the Swan River Colony and how Guildford developed as an inland port; the arrival of the convicts; the impact of the railway and how Guildford became a fashionable place to live.

Many historical and rare items are featured from the Swan Guildford Historical Society Collection – one of the most significant collections in Western Australia. These include costumes & uniforms, paintings, furniture and Aboriginal artefacts.  There is also the opportunity to view many images from the early days of Guildford and the Swan Valley.

The exhibition is a partnership between Swan Guildford Historical Society, Lotterywest and the City of Swan.  A fascinating booklet was produced in conjunction with this exhibition which can be downloaded here.

Admission is free during opening hours – 9am to 4pm daily.Military Uniform Low Resolution
